Ah the plot thickened- I discovered that once inside the hub and with the axle out, the bearing was not totally at fault. The hardened area on the axle had failed and worn down more than enough for the bearing to not be able to do its job. In the course of pursuing that I further discovered that to be pretty common problem based on the salvage yard prices quoted. At this moment it’s raining and has been all night. Since I have a roadster garage (no top) work is halted till conditions improve. The new bearing and seal are in place along with another “better” axle. What’s left you ask? Reassembling the actual differential and filling with VERY expensive synthetic differential oil. $20 a quart- required. Reassembling the differential has one challenge that I know of at this point, besides the rain, it’s a mechanically limited slip and has more gears than I expected and one dropped out during disassemble. I might wish I had another hand before I get it in place and the axle clip in.

Tonight is the meeting about forming a “historic district” of 2nd Ave. It’s being held across the street so I won’t have a lot of travel time. I think it’s a ”not relative” issue. I discovered that the “historical district” thing is strictly a Mesa thing other than some funding for signage to go on the street signs- Whoopee not.

Honestly this morning I wasn’t too shook-up about the rain. Not having to go out and expect to be getting under and back out from under a vehicle a few hundred times this morning felt like a good thing. I’m getting warning signals from by back about having done it so much the last couple of days. We’ll see how the day develops. If it stops early enough I can blow the water off the concrete, dry some tools I left under there and get going again. Yet to be determined.
