Sunday Evening
After a relaxing Sunday about 2:30 I thought I’d go ahead a change the oil in the Ford while it was still up on stands. I had the oil & filter plus a can of engine flush. I wanted use the flush because the oil doesn’t have that many miles on it but its OLD. If used properly flush won’t hurt a thing and it’s fast easy and not too pricey. I’ve never had good luck at quick change places and actually had damage in at least one instance. It’s still tempting though but once again I’m glad I stuck with my original plan. The Ford has two drain plugs but rarely do people drain both. That to me is like changing oil without changing the filter – dumb. Ok so I climb under it with tools and drain pan and drain the front of the pan. After it had drained and stopped dripping I pushed back a little further to main drain plug. It came out just fine – no problems, It wasn’t till I started to clean and replace the second plug that I noticed there were almost no threads on the plug. It had most of two threads and should have had 10. They were just gone. I was not happy with that situation. As I thought back it had unscrewed properly and didn’t actually feel like there was a problem and it hadn’t been leaking. I went and got a new plug. Nice sharp threads. I couldn’t get my head back there to inspect the threads in the pan so on it went along with gasket maker material. It threaded up straight and true but I was VERY cautious about tightening it VERY cautious. Just snug. I have high hopes that it will hold as I’m letting the chemical gasket material sit over night at least before adding the new oil. I had been wiping drips of transmission fluid off the lines back under the car during this process and assumed they were from the repair I did on the other ends of the lines. It was about then that I noticed a puddle. It was only about 2 or 3 inches in diameter but it doesn’t take much transmission fluid to make a lasting puddle but . . . Yes folks I have two more transmission lines to fix and at this point I don’t have clue how get to them . I could JUST reach them to wipe them off in the hopes of identifying exactly where they are leaking from. It looks like I’ll be re-making a wrench tomorrow IF it isn’t raining as predicted. On the plus side of the next phase of this renovation the parts I ordered for the front end were expected Thursday or Friday came in Saturday. Wow! Oh Yeah- I have to fix the cooler lines or I’ll be laying in transmission fluid.
