One of the results of last evening’s storm

An example of as long as I'm up there fixing those I really SHOULD take care of these.

Those old 4x6" beams were covered with roof at one time. They have been exposed beams since 1993 or 1994 as I recall. I don't want to recall the number of hours I've spent on a ladder repairing and filling the cracks and splits in them, not to mention the painting or the number of times that process has taken place. It's time for them to be gone strictly from a practical standpoint. They did add some character to the facade but I'm not excited by the price in labor (mine) to retain them. Therefore the options seem to be to use a chainsaw or a Sawsall with a extra good blade to cut them off flush and maybe wrap the ends in aluminum before launching the painting. I'm thinking that some temporary repair to hold the roofing down and cut the beams first as I'd probably want the aluminum to go back under the new rafters I'll be putting in to secure the roofing. Does any of that make sense to you?
