What a rain! I was about 18 miles from home and it was raining. It had been a nice rain – gentle, slow and peaceful. I walked out of a store – fired up the old Scout as the intensity of the rain started to significantly increase. I thought the way I got there I driven several times so . . . I took off the opposite direction. Well that proved to be less than FUN. I knew where I was and I knew what direction I wanted to go and had a general idea about how I intended to get that done. About 3-5 minutes later the rain increased drastically. I believe that the rain today was, at least AS intense as I’ve been in for many years. I never felt lost but I really wasn’t sure of the best route to get home, I tried a couple alternatives – Choice 1st surface streets – stop light every ONE mile or closer- each an opportunity for someone not being able to stop behind me – visibility was not good either. So I sort of vacillated in my thinking – direct route with A LOT of stop lights and intersections or drive a little further on freeways. Finally I went for the freeways – I’m glad I did. Everyone was running about 55-65 and allowing plenty of room. Usually traffic that route would be running a LOT faster and making crazy maneuvers to gain a half car length in the traffic. While all these mental processes were going on I was watching the desert on both sides- WHAT DESERT – only giant lakes with a few desert trees and an occasional cactus. Off the road way it was WATER. Frankly the entire trip was a light grade adventure and not all that bad. I will admit that the off-road tires on the Scout only added to the adventure aspect – Not the best for rain slick roads in AZ. I’ve know for years about rain on roads that haven’t been rained on in a very long time. Oh a shower from time to time but not hard driving full out gully washing, toad strangling down pouring RAIN. Hint- The roads are slick, very slick. By the time I got back home I could see evidence of a lot of rain having fallen but it was back to a pleasant shower I thought I’d best do a building check. Thankfully no damage or leaks were noted in the building.
Any leftover wisdom to remember? Yeah ! It’s fall and don’t forget to cover a ‘laid in fire’ in the outside fireplace when there’s chance of rain. Sure would have been nice to have the first fire of the season. Pretty early but I’m ready, Then I want the fixen’s for a pot of Chili in a Dutch oven over the open fire.
