I was feeling so great about actually finishing a project yesterday that I thought I’d push ahead. The Scout has had a leaking radiator for quite a while and the last tine I drove it I noticed another coolant leak. It seemed to be in the area behind the starter. OK a likely spot there is a freeze plug and it looked like I’d just take the starter off and have a little room to work. While it was inside and apart I’d measure the radiator to verify a replacement is available as I can buy a new one for less that getting it fixed. I backed it in and got it located where I thought I wanted it and reached for the key to turn it off. Well that didn’t work out so well. The key wouldn’t turn. I turned the steering wheel a little each way to check to see if it was just the steering wheel lock not allowing the key to turn. No such luck. A little more piddling around with it and I finally killed the engine and disconnected the battery. Oh Joy- I haven’t tried to fix the turn signals before because I didn’t want to get into the steering column – Looks like it’s time to tackle the column AGAIN- I just did that 10-12 years ago. As of late afternoon yesterday parts of the steering column are spread all around the interior, the turn signal switch is almost out and the ignition key set is laying an a table.

See now, that's the headaches you get when you take a nice, utilitarian vehicle like an IH Scout and start making it all fancy with snooty bells and whistles like turn signals and turning ignition keys.
